Students enrolled in Earth Sciences at Carleton University enjoy the unique advantage of studying in the nation’s capital, providing easy access to co-op opportunities in government departments and private industry.

The Department of Earth Sciences is a member of the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre which offers students the unique opportunity to take courses at both Carleton University and the University of Ottawa while benefiting from the expertise of a larger pool of professors. In addition to a diverse perspective from faculty members in the field, students come from all over the world with varying undergraduate experiences; this unique diversity of backgrounds and cultures thereby further enriching your class-room studies and research opportunities.

Applying for Graduate Studies - How do you start? 

  1. Start by deciding which areas of research interest you and find out who is working in that area.  Refer to the Members page to find out what professors are working on.
  2. Contact professors directly by phone or email.
  3. When you have received confirmation from the professors that they are willing to work with you, you may apply online with a full application.

Department deadlines for applications

  • February 1 for Fall Term admission
  • November 1 for Winter Term and Spring Term admission.

Graduate Courses

Not all of the graduate courses are offered in a given year. For an up-to-date statement of course offerings and to determine the term of offering, consult the class schedule at


  • Prospective graduate students are considered for financial support at the time their application is considered.
  • In order to be considered for the first round of funding (financial support), we recommend that all documents be received by February 1st of each year for Fall admission.
  • M.Sc. and Ph.D. students (Canadian citizens and landed immigrants) may receive a stipend which is comprised of a teaching assistantship, scholarship, and research assistantship.
  • NSERC and OGS Scholarships - Current and prospective graduate students are encouraged to apply for Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) scholarships and Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS), which are awarded annually to outstanding students by the federal and provincial governments.  
  • Internal and Department Specific Endowment Scholarships - A limited number of internal scholarships are available to graduate students registered at Carleton University.  You can apply for these scholarships once you are registered in one of our programs.
